Things to know
The island of Murter was inhabited during the Middle Ages, and at least two villages were already formed. At the time of the second half of the 15th century in the region Sibenik Turkish troops raids frequently, therefore it was a logical decision of the Venetian government to prevent access to the island of Murter. For the defense of the island of Murter, it was decided to build towers and walls and, of course, this was done where the island is closest to the mainland. The measures for the construction of a fort were taken in 1474 and in 1475 the building was completed. From historical documents was narrated that at this point, the channel could be crossed on foot.
The city walls were certainly a major factor for the settlement to the island behind the newly constructed walls, when the Turks constantly threatened the citizens of the country.
It is not possible to determine the exact time of the emigration of the settlements in the vicinity of the mainland to the island. Probably, this process has lasted years, and in the historical analogy of other settlements, which were available at that time, it is possible that the present settlement served only to bring themselves from the Turkish threat to safety. Then as the raids were completed, the population has gone back to the old houses in Oštrica, Ivinj and Dazlina. However, a portion of the population has settled permanently on the island due to the increasingly frequent raids of the Turkish troops. A larger number of the population moved certainly in the first half of the 16th Century. Handed down from historical sources, the Turks burn the parish church of Sv. Martina Ivinj down and the refugee population then formed a new parish church of Sv. Duh in Tisno. This was the time when Tisno has been established in 1548.
On one of the surviving drawings of “Kraj u Tishno” (end in Tishno) from 1567, it can be seen that the Church was a ship building with a small narthex, apse and bell tower on a capstans. This was the beginning, as the new residents have stabilized and started the construction of their new municipal solid homes. On these traditional drawings it can be seen that the residents of Tisno have lived in modest bungalows with thatched roofs, and the number of population was very small. But very soon all the typical features of an island-city draw from, with stone houses and the usual repertoire of architectural details that are encountered in other island resorts (Balatura, Archway, lighting, narrow woven streets, etc.)
The location of Tisno between the island and the mainland gives the village a few advantages over other villages on the island. Soon, though, even the youngest colony on the island, became the most important. A special pulse gets Tisno in the late 17th and early 18th Century, when several families from Italy in Tisno settle. Tisno island is one of the few places on which to settle Italians. Especially at this time of the growing settlement, strengthening the economic base and the increasing density of population civil buildings, commercial and residential buildings are built that reflect the typical characteristics of the Dalmatian baroque style. In particular, the quality of palatial buildings of the Banchetti and Gelpi family stand out. In the 19th Century it was built a house, which stands out for its architectural quality and in which the city council resided.
